School counselor charged with raping teen girl

A West High School guidance counselor has been arrested, accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student.

Marco Herrera, 51, is charged with three first-degree felony counts of rape, two first-degree felony counts of forcible sodomy and five second-degree felony counts of forcible sexual abuse, court documents state. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

West High School has terminated Herrera's employment, police said.

Herrera allegedly had sex with the girl at least three times between April 1 and June 30, court documents state. He also allegedly fondled her and engaged in oral sex with the student at least seven times.

Police spokesman Jeff Bedard said detectives are continuing their investigation of Herrera and are asking parents with further information to call 801-799-3000.
